The Good Old Days

Innovate or Evaporate! This corporate “buzz” phrase surfaced a while back to show the relationship between innovative, new, creative business management tactics and the winners and losers in Corporate America.

The concept is very simple, you act creative and innovate new business processes or your business will disappear much as water evaporates from a half full glass. You go to work one morning and bingo, you’ve lost a key client to a more innovative competitor. The same day you lose your best technician and five key sales people. That afternoon, your banker pulls your line of credit. Forlorn, you sit behind your eight-foot mahogany desk, in your double windowed corner penthouse office overlooking the fountain courtyard area at your new Mercedes. You ponder many thoughts of how you arrived at such a dilemma and you are consumed with fear that tomorrow may bring worse.

Murphy’s Law becomes your business plan, your mother-in-law is your best sales person, your latte/espresso machine catches fire and burns down the warehouse, your fire insurance lapsed last week, the third quarter financial report comes back from the CPA with bottom line comments, “Your Business Sucks.” All this was set in motion because you failed to plan, you underestimated the “little competitor” across town and you cut the marketing budget eighty-percent and increased your salary ninety- percent. Unreal you say, happens every day.

Successful, strong growth companies look for the new stuff. They stay beyond the edge. The so-called “cutting edge” is too dull for them. They color way outside the box and it is often said on their report card, “does not play well with others.” The sandbox and playground are too crowded for them. Innovation is their lifeblood and they’ll kill quarterly dividends three quarters in a row to introduce a new line, a new service or new plant expansion.

They refuse to and they will not slink into a position of gross predictability because predictability invites rust. "Rust is just one of the early indicators of solid mass “evaporation.”
